Brief description of pulse capacitors

The new electrotechnologies based on high current pulse discharge, flowing through the coil of inductance, gas or liquid has received further development. To the mentioned above technologies we can add magnetic punching, crushing of rock, clearing the metal casting and so on. Laser technologies which are used both in industry and in medicine are being more developed.
In these technologies pulse high-voltage capacitors are used as one the basic elements of equipment. The requirements of increasing the specific energy, the working frequency of capacitors, the decreasing of tg ? of their inductance and internal resistance of the high voltage capacitors are demanded nowadays. It is impossible to answer these requirements completely with the application of the traditional paper-oil isolation for pulse capacitors, because of rather high dielectric losses.
The innovating work on the creation of the series of film pulse capacitors with the specific energy of 0,1; 0,2; 0,3 J/g, low-inductance high currents capacitors and low-inductance high-frequency capacitors for laser technologies has been carried on by the company Russian Technological Group together with All-Russia electrotechnical institute.
The most important part of this work was the research and deeper understanding of the physical mechanisms determining the ageing of film capacitors during their operation with the high voltage of electric field, consisting of 250 300 kV/mm. Carried out researches allowed to begin the development of the technology of creation the film capacitors of high specific energy with the more proved position. The basic features of this technology were defined in the process of research and consist of the following:
1) Use of optimum factor press of sections in a package and the elimination of the possibility of the excessive press;
2) Elimination of sources of additional pollution of a film at manufacturing sections and assembly of dry packages (winding sections in a "clean" room, observance of industrial hygiene, etc.);
3) Elimination of probable pollution of the isolation of the capacitor during its impregnation due to transition from a group method of impregnation to individual and the exception of a reuse of a liquid after clearing it by the sorbents;
4) Careful vacuum drying film isolation of the capacitor within 48 hours at temperature 95-105 0;
5) Careful vacuum-thermal preparation of a filled in liquid with the purpose of elimination of the dissolved moisture;
6) Refusal of application stabilizing epoxy additives.
It is necessary to note, that the mentioned above technology as a whole is directed on the elimination of the dust content pollution, a moisture and stabilizing additives from capacitor isolation. Such requirements the technology of manufacture of capacitors are not new. However the strict observance of these requirements at manufacturing pulse film capacitors as our researches, have shown are a lot higher, than at manufacture of capacitors with paper-castor isolation.
On the basis of the carried out researches and the developed technology a series of pulse capacitors KPI and KPI1 type has been created.

The main technical characteristics of pulse capacitors

Pulse capacitors KPI and KPI1 are assigned for the working in electrophysical and technological installations in a pulse mode with frequency of recurrence of pulses up to 1 Hz. Capacitors are designed for the voltage of 5-200 kV and have the plastic cold-resistant case. Capacitors can work both in vertical, and in horizontal positions. Application of voltage in reverse polarity in the capacitor at the discharge on loading no more than 10 %. The design life of the capacitor specified in the table, corresponds to such type of the discharge, at probability of the non-failure operation equal 0,90. However capacitors can successfully operate an obvious presence of the oscillatory character of the discharge. In this case for preservation of a design life it is necessary to reduce charge voltage. Characteristics of capacitors KPI and KPI1 type are given in tables 1 and 2. The appearance and overall dimensions of capacitors KPI are shown in figures 1 and 2, and appearance and overall dimensions of the capacitors KPI1 are shown in figures 3 and 4.


Limiting climatic influences
The rating value of the climatic factors on Russian 15543-70 and 15150-69, in particular, importances of temperature are in a range from + 1 to + 35.
Environment is unexplosive, free of dust with small resistance and aggressive gases in concentration decreasing the parameters of the capacitor in inadmissible limits.

Limiting mechanical influences
The capacitors can stand the influence of vibrating loadings in a range of 5-200 Hz frequencies with the amplitude of 0,5 mm and acceleration 19,6 m/s2; influence of shock loadings with acceleration 147 m/s2 and duration of impact 5-10 mc.


The capacity of pulse capacitor may to deviate from nominal at 10 %. In the table shown internal inductance of capacitor, i.e. without the inductance of connections. The max. current of pulse capacitor is 100 kA. The resource is shown for the case, when it discharges to the load with the max. voltage reverse not more 10% and the ambient temperature +20 C. When the service conditions deviate from one are shown in the table, resource may be calculated by the formula: N =N0*K1*K2*K3*K4, where N0 - nominal resource; K1, K2, K3, K4 - a longevity coefficients, which determine with the aid of curves, are shown in the Fig. ( 3 ), ( 4 ), ( 5 ), ( 6 ).

Field of application of pulse capacitors

The capacitors assigned for high voltage pulse testing, for electrotechnology (magnetic punching,stone crushing etc.), for electrophysical sets are destined for preparing high-temperature plasma etc


The manufacturer guarantees the design life given in the table with probability of non-failure operation - 0,9 or faultless operation of the capacitor within 12 months after shipment, depending on that comes before.
